The quickest route to the palace from The Lodge hotel is via the District line (towards Tower Hill) take the train to St. James Park and from there it is a 9-minute walk to the Palace.
Buckingham Palace is the London home and the administrative center of the British royal family. The enormous building and extensive gardens are an important site of ceremonial and political affairs in the United Kingdom, as well as a major tourist attraction. But for a monarchy that dates back almost a thousand years, Buckingham Palace is a relatively new home.
Buckingham House was renovated into a palace in the 1820s after George IV commissioned architect John Nash. However, it was Queen Victoria who was the first British monarch to use the palace as their official residence when she moved there in 1837. Since then the palace has served as the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns, and today it is the administrative headquarters of the monarch.
During the summer, you can tour the 19 spectacular State Rooms. These magnificent rooms are decorated with some of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection, including paintings by Rembrandt, Rubens and Canaletto. Each year Buckingham Palace hosts a special exhibition as part of the summer opening.
Buckingham Palace Garden is not usually open to the public. However, when Buckingham Palace is open during August and September, visitors have access to part of the garden, which forms the exit from the palace at the end of the tour.
